On Friday night, CNN reported that it has confirmed that the first charges have been filed in the investigation into Russian tampering in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The person or persons reportedly charged have not been identified.

Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who has been appointed as an independent investigator in the issue, has broad ranging powers to indict, so the charges could range from direct involvement in election malfeasance, or for impeding the investigation or other related matters.
The charges were reportedly issued through a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., and have been sealed by a federal judge. The charges are expected to be released over the weekend or by Monday.
